Amy's Story
In 2006, at the age of 32, Amy’s life took an unexpected turn. A single, divorced mother, she discovered a lump in her breast. Despite a lack of family history, her gut feeling prompted her to seek medical attention. After an initial delay, a doctor's visit revealed a hard, concerning mass. The diagnosis: Stage 2B invasive ductal carcinoma, an aggressive, HER2+ cancer. Further tests revealed a devastating truth: 28 cancerous lymph nodes. Less than 1% of women presented with her specific cancer type.
Amy’s case was immediately taken up by a research team at the University of Michigan. Within hours, she was meeting with an oncologist, bracing herself for the battle ahead. The journey was arduous. Surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation followed. Two surgeries were required to achieve clean margins, and 28 lymph nodes were ultimately removed. Two years of chemotherapy, including the intense "red devil" (Adriamycin) regimen, brought her to her knees. Side effects were brutal: vision loss, bone pain, mouth sores, and extreme weight loss. At her lowest, she weighed just 92 pounds. The cancer was initially thought to have spread to her lung, leading to a year of Stage 4 diagnosis before ultimately being reclassified as Stage 3B. In total, she endured 58 rounds of radiation.
Through it all, Amy’s spirit remained unbroken. Even during the darkest days of treatment, she wrote a heartfelt letter to Comcast, expressing gratitude for their continued service during her hardship. This act of kindness led to a job at Comcast in 2009, just as her hair began to grow back. Starting as a B2B sales representative, she quickly rose through the ranks, earning a spot in the President's Club and becoming a top performer. She credits her success to the grit and determination forged during her cancer battle.
Amy’s journey wasn't just about survival; it was about thriving. She participated in four clinical trials, including a HER2+ trial that led to the approval of Herceptin, a life-extending therapy. She saw her experience as an opportunity to help other women facing similar challenges.
Beyond her professional achievements, Amy faced further adversity. She navigated a divorce, the loss of her father, and financial hardship, including bankruptcy. Representing herself in court, she won her case through diligent research and unwavering self-advocacy.
Amy’s story is a testament to the power of resilience, gratitude, and an unwavering spirit. She embodies the idea of turning adversity into strength, and her life is a powerful example of what's possible when you refuse to give up. Her experience has shaped her outlook on life: "Nothing is taken for granted. Hustle. No excuses." Amy is a warrior, a survivor, and an inspiration.
